The way to increase the productivity by using motivation may be different in different situations and for different people. The first step to effectively motivating your team is to gain a deep understanding of each person on your team. Find out what makes them tick – what makes them feel good about their work. Leverage your findings to create a strategy to keep each individual member of your team motivated to do great work.
Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the intensity of desire or need, incentive or reward value of the goal, and expectations of the individual and of his or her peers. These factors are the reasons one has for behaving a certain way.
Most motivation theorists assume that motivation is involved in the performance of all learned responses; that is, a learned behavior will not occur unless it is energized. The major question among psychologists, in general, is whether the motivation is a primary or secondary influence on behavior. That is, change in behavior better explained by principles of environmental/ecological influences, perception, memory, cognitive development, emotion, explanatory style, or personality or are concepts unique to motivation more pertinent.

Intrinsic motivation
We do things because we enjoy doing them. For example, we exercise because it feels good to exercise.
A person is intrinsically motivated if the desire for change comes from within the individual. The person may want to learn something because he or she is interested. Another person may want to accomplish a goal or task because it is something he or she feels competent at and enjoys doing.
Extrinsic motivation
We do things because of the tangible rewards, e.g. good grades, money, etc. For example, we exercise because we want to lose weight.
The extrinsic motivation comes from outside the person. They are bribed to do something or they earn a prize or reward. Paychecks are extrinsic motivators. Fear of punishment and coercion are also extrinsic motivators.

Cognitive theories
Cognitive theories of motivation seek to explain human behavior as a product of the careful study and active processing and interpretation of information received. Such a perspective runs counter to rationalizing human behavior as a result of automatic responses governed by pre-programmed rules or innate mechanisms involving drives, needs, and reactions.
